SENEGAL (October 28-31, 2013)

On Monday, October 28, Mel and I departed from Soma (The Gambia) to Dakar (Senegal). The bus ride was 11 HOURS! We were not anticipating that. We arrived late at night, hungry and thirsty and smelly and exhausted.

Lindsey's friend Matar was able to connect us to his close friend, Azu, who lives in Dakar. We were welcomed by Azu and his cousin Shahar. They opened up their home to us, bought us food, and showed us where to take our baths.

Azu and Shahar were wonderful to us and they spent the next two days watching over us and taking us all around Dakar. I was so thankful for them because the official language in Senegal is French and it would have been difficult for us to navigate.

Here are some pictures from that trip:

The Senegalese White House.

Statue representing rebirth/renaissance.

Billiards to end the night!

Mel with Fatma--such a chatty little diva--and Prince.

Mel with the twins :-)

On Wednesday they took us to the zoo.

All about the statues ;-)

Cold drinks after the zoo with my travel buddy :-)

Hanging out at the beach!

Shahar and I--I wore his hat all weekend and he gave it to me as a gift when we left.

Wearing traditional outfits to sit in on a Muslim service. Like The Gambia, Senegal is predominantly Muslim.

Our transport to the Senegal/Gambia border- a sept-place. Small car, seven seats, very uncomfortable. Here we are taking a bathroom break and stretching.

On the ferry crossing the River Gambia.

And were reunited with Lindsey by Thursday afternoon!
