Royalty

A little historical background before I start...
Before Europeans came in and colonized the African continent, dividing it among themselves like a piece of pie, there were no countries- there were kingdoms and empires. There were no nationalities- there were tribes, or people groups. And these people were ruled by kings.
Today we call these kings "chiefs". The European colonizers stripped them of their title by renaming them chiefs, telling them they now serve their king and therefore cannot be kings themselves.
Ghana gained independence from the British in 1957 and has since operated under a democracy. Kwame Nkrumah was Ghana's first president. Today the president of Ghana is John Mahama.
Chiefs still have great influence in Ghanaian society and are highly honored by the community. Their title, Nana, signifies royalty. They also have authority over the traditional laws and customs of the land.
Many of the local Nanas came over to the Bronyibima house where we served them drinks, dinner, and dessert. Daddy Nyamekye is a sub-Nana for the city of Agona. He is the leader over community development.
Here are some pictures from our time with the Nanas-
